Hope To Develop A Healthy Lifestyle
by Daniel Dawson
Obesity has been a pandemic in the USA for quite a while. The statistics are startling if not downright horrifying; as of 2012 around 29 percent of Americans were considered overweight. In the UK, the story is pretty much the same with the percentage of obese people having doubled over the past two and a half decades.
There is a ray of hope, however, as millions of people in the country and across the world, have decided to take the bull by the horns so to speak. Just take a stroll one day and you will see them; these are the regular people who wake up early every day to run or go to the gym. You will clearly see the determination written all over their faces as they conquer the tarmac one step at a time or lifting weights. It can be quite inspiring for those who may still be pondering on how to deal with their own situations.
A weight-loss odyssey is a noble venture and people have their own motivations for embarking upon it. For many, losing weight is seen as an aesthetics enhancer. This means that their primary objective is looking better. Such a mentality has existed for many years. Most people who think this way have probably been victims of ostracism or ridicule for a long period of time. It might be a teenaged girl who believed that her weight is what caused her unpopularity in school. It could be a single mom who thought the only way to become attractive was by shedding a few pounds. Or, maybe it was a high-school boy who was bullied due to his weight.
The Internet and television have also had a huge role in persuading people that the sole means of being successful or well-liked is being well-toned and lean. Losing excess weight is obviously quite beneficial. However, the above-mentioned approach is probably not the ideal one to employ. The good news, however, is that a growing number of people are coming to realize this.
Today, quite a number of people who are trying to kill the bulge are doing so primarily for health reasons. These are people who came to the realization that they were living dangerous lives and, therefore, changes had to be made. This is increasingly happening because more and more people are now very well informed about the dangers of living with excess weight. Today, the average person understands that the risk of suffering a heart attack is significantly increased if one is overweight. Most people also know that problems like high blood pressure, diabetes and even cancer are more likely to manifest if one shuns a healthy lifestyle.
One of the major differences seen between those attempting to lose weight for aesthetics and those who have a goal of improving health is that the latter tend to be more consistent and patient in eating well. This difference is because they have an understanding that true weight loss does not take place overnight but requires a long commitment. These people are more likely to follow a plan to the end and appreciate seemingly small gains that can add up over time. Such individuals are less likely to follow the radical fad diets that promise quick fixes because they understand that the journey involved in losing weight is as important as reaching that destination weight goal.
This trend has really been picking up over the years with millions shunning unhealthy living. More focus is now on adopting a healthy diet, as opposed to starving oneself in the name of burning calories. Undoubtedly, this is very encouraging because it shows that people are returning to sanity as far as their personal health is concerned.
Much as magazines, movies and other productions are still quite influential with regard to the issue of personal image, more people are now wiser. The will to succeed is even stronger in people who have had an up close experience with the dangers of being overweight. Some may have lost loved ones because of the various associated conditions while others may have been victims themselves.
What people should fully comprehend is that it is never too late, and they may change their destinies for the better. A little focus, will-power, and motivation are all it requires. Personal health must never be taken for granted; rather, it must be safeguarded at all costs. It is literally a matter of life and death!
