Star Trek: Kettlebell Exercises

by Greg Diener

After the U.S.S. Voyager was stuck in the Delta Quadrant in 2371, the people on the ship were stuck with wondering what they were going to do stranded so far away. Because of this though, there was one benefit, the Voyager became the first ship to introduce kettlebells in that part of the universe. Captain Kathryn Janeway for example was natural at using these incredible weights, she made the entire crew see what these round shaped weights were all about.

Captain Janeway, although a very athletic and capable tennis player, was also committed to other ancient Earth exercise schedules. After her father, Admiral Edward Janeway, emphasized that he wanted her to participate in the additional timeless sports, Kathryn Janeway systematically learned numerous of the great athletic traditions of her home planet. Thus, she learned about kettlebells and they presented her well, getting her in shape to play tennis while still in high school.

Then all of a sudden, Captain Janeway would use her training with kettlebells in her quarters to take away stress and keep herself very fit. She always wanted to put herself in tip-top shape and she could perform efficient exercises with the weights when she felt like it. During an invasion of her ship, she took down about a dozen people alone with one of the kettlebells!

Janeway was the ship's champion at kettlebell lifting, even defeating Tuvok in deadlifting. This stayed until Seven of Nine came on board Voyager in 2374. With the superior strength of the Borg, Seven was able to best Janeway numerous times in kettlebell competition lifting. Janeway tried to fight with Seven until too many lifts landed her in sickbay with a sprained back. After experiencing the pain of both a bad back and the Doctor's lectures, Janeway promised to only use kettlebells for aerobics in the future.

This goes to prove that helpful exercise traditions live on, no matter how effective technology gets. Janeway, who had access to hundreds of exercise plans from a trillion stars, chose kettlebells, an ancient Russian idea, as one of her choice means to keep fit. These kettlebells would see much action too, as they traveled across the Delta Quadrant on Voyager's long journey home.
