Test To Predict Menopause
by Liana Badea
Menopause sets in when the monthly menstrual cycle stops and the woman reproductive role in society stops. At menopausal age the number of eggs in a female body reaches the lowest count.
A female body forms eggs in her ovaries while she is still in her mother's womb. At birth she has hundreds of thousands of eggs. At adolescence, about 300,000 , in her 40's about 25,000 and at menopause about 1000.
Every woman will have a different menopause experience, as every woman is different. Some women will start the menopause at 45, some will get it at 55 and some women anywhere in between. Some will have tough times dealing with hot flashes and joint pain, some will barely feel the change.
If you knew natural menopause was likely to happen to you in four to five years, would you make a life decision based on this?
Lots of researches have been made on fertility. New tests have been developed to determine menopausal age. One of these test is to measure the volume of ovaries.
The theory behind this research is that as a woman ages, ovaries shrink. Therefore, there is a direct correlation between ovarian volume and number of eggs. Researchers applied mathematical and computer models to predict menopause and potentially help women to plan their lives.
This test could be the beginning of a new stage for women who can not conceive, for women treated for different cancers, actually for all women.
Regarding the assisted reproductive technology, the overall success rate is still low, especially for older women. Researches showed that a 30 years old woman attempting to get pregnant has a 30 percent chance, a 35 year old woman has a 24 percent chance, while a 40 years old has only 17 percent chance!
My conclusion is obvious. No woman should wait too long to plan babies, no matter how advanced the assisted reproductive technology is.
So, is this test good enough to predict menopause? Should a woman depend on a test like this and make life decision based on it? Can a test really tell how many years of fertility a woman have left?
The answer is NO. How could you possibly tell someone to go ahead and change their life because of a test result?
